Superintendent

  • Welcome to the Brawley Union High School District and the start of the 2017-2018 school year.  I hope everyone's summer was restful and rejuvenating.  I look forward to the beginning of the school year and mirroring the successful strides we made last year.  The District was named to the College Board's Honor Roll in 2017 for its accomplishments regarding Advanced Placement test results.  Brawley Union High School received a CSBA Golden Bell Award for its Civics Program Initiative and was also honored by the White House for its Environmental Literacy Initiative.  It was also named a US News & World Best High School.  Desert Valley High School was named a California Model Continuation School and received a six year WASC Accreditation.  Additionally, our students were featured in a number of video documentaries and magazine articles highlighting their academic achievement.   I am thankful to have the opportunity to lead this District and pledge to act in the best interest of all of the students we serve.

The District will strive to ensure your child receives a high quality educational experience while being actively involved and personally connected.  Our goals remain to increase the educational achievement of all of our students, increase college and career readiness, close achievement gaps, provide a positive school climate, improve communication efforts among stakeholders, and ensure a safe and orderly environment.

Our staff has been working hard all summer in preparation for the start of the school year for students on August 21, 2017.  Modernization of classrooms in the "Junior College" building has been completed.  The Science wing has received an external makeover focused on energy efficency.  Significant upgrades to District Wi-Fi capacity have been accomplished and a new fire alarm system has been installed at DVHS.  The culinary arts room at BUHS has been significantly renovated and the welding facility has undergone an electrical upgrade and new safety features have been added.  After several years of inoperability, restrooms have been restored  in the BUHS CTE Complex.  The BUHS quad is receiving a new landscaping makeover.  Additionally, the tennis courts are being completely resurfaced.

Students will be afforded enhanced technology instructional opportunities as we double our Wi-Fi capacity and continue to increase our computer tablet device to student ratios.  English, Math, Science, and Social Studies instructors will continue with specialized professional development to enhance the District's Common Core Standards implementation.  BUHS will enter into a partnership with the College Board and Khan Academy this year to promote college readiness through individualized test preparation regarding the SAT.  Career technical education offerings continue to be expanded this year with the addition of sections in multiple areas.  BUHS will also see the addition of Advanced Placement Psychology and Advanced Placement Computer Science Courses this year.  Additionally, AP courses will be receiving new textbooks.

I am excited and look forward to working with the community during the upcoming school year.  Thank you for your support as we strive to educate all of our students in a safe, positive, and academically challenging environment.

    Cordially,

    Simon Canalez
