Degrees and Certifications:
Mr. Simon Canalez
I hope you are all having a wonderful summer break! This school year affords us with many opportunities to improve the lives of our students. BUHSD will to strive to ensure that we provide a safe environment conducive to learning for all students and personnel. Our goals remain to support and sustain the educational achievement of all of our students, close achievement gaps, provide a positive school climate, improve communication efforts among stakeholders, and ensure a safe and orderly environment.
The District has made many strides to enhance services across the Multi Tiered System of Support spectrum. To enhance academic support, we are thrilled to welcome Tracy Cruz (Math), Austin Ortega (Math), Bryce Petter (English), Valerie Vellas (English), and Alicyn Monita (Ag) to our teaching staff. Amy Fargo is joining us in the counseling department at BUHS as we move to alphabet caseload support of students to lower ratios and enhance services. We are excited to announce the hiring of Carissa Woodland, as our first ever full-time school nurse. We will continue to contract with ICOE for additional LVN and medical services. We are bringing Hazel Health to the District this school year. Hazel Health will afford supplemental physical and mental health services to all students during and after school in a virtual setting.
This year we will be teaming with Fresno State University to offer a Parent Support Program that will provide online workshops held throughout the year that will deliver key information to parents on topics from parenting skills, financial literacy, digital literacy, health and wellness, and pathways to college. We are launching a new communication tool named Apptegy this year that will enable us to enhance all aspects of communication with our students and parents. Additionally, we will sustain our full-time mental health specialists and our afterschool program facilitated by ARC. We are also continuing our partnership with IVROP and welcome Leslie Rojas, who will support CTE full-time in the college and career center. PBIS will remain a mainstay across the District as each site refines its core values and rolls out their rewards systems. All of these programs will help BUHSD to provide appropriate support and intervention for all students through a MTSS environment.
Our staff has been working hard all summer in preparation for the start of the school year for students on August 22, 2022. The second phase of a major roofing project is nearing completion that focused on the New Gym, CR 8-10, 11-13, 14-16, 42-46, 47-50, 69-73, Cafeteria/Multipurpose room, and the Renaissance Program. A number of renovations were completed in classrooms and workspaces across the district. Enhancements to security systems were also completed.
I am excited and look forward to working with all of you during the upcoming school year. Let us make it one of the best ever!
