Brawley Union High School student‑athlete Lucca Rubin has achieved a historic milestone, becoming one of just 16 students nationwide selected to serve on the NFHS National Student Advisory Council. Her appointment places her on a national platform where she will represent not only the Imperial Valley, but the entire state of California.
Rubin, a member of the BUHS Class of 2028, is an incoming junior known for her academic excellence, athletic commitment, and leadership across campus. She maintains a 4.0 GPA while competing on varsity and travel volleyball, serving as a Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) student leader, participating in the Imperial Valley Sportsmanship Council, and holding office as the newly elected ASB Commissioner of Athletics.
Representing Section 7, Rubin joins the council’s third cohort, a group responsible for advocating on behalf of 15 million students across nearly 20,000 high schools. Her selection was supported by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and BUHS Athletic Director Billy Brewer.
Reflecting on her experience, Rubin said she felt honored and excited to represent her community. “I feel really honored because that’s such a big thing — to think they thought of me for that,” she shared. “It was really cool to be able to talk about the Imperial Valley and talk about where I’m from.” Although she initially felt nervous traveling across the country, she quickly found comfort among peers. “Everyone was super welcoming, really nice, and outgoing. We got to do student‑led discussions and hear different perspectives from different counties.”
Rubin credits part of her preparation to BUHS’s own Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAC). “We have our own Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAC) here, and that was really cool because not all schools have their very own,” she said. “I learned a lot here that I was able to take over, and that experience helped me.”
As Rubin prepares for her junior year, she hopes her journey encourages other students to embrace opportunities that may feel intimidating. “It’s grown me as a person to be able to use my voice and not be afraid,” she said. “Even though something seems big and scary, it really isn’t. Just relax and have fun with it.”
Throughout her term, Rubin will serve as a direct youth voice to the national governing body for high school sports and performing arts. She and her fellow council members will gather student insights from their regions, identify support needs for state associations, and lead initiatives aimed at strengthening student participation in cocurricular activities.
