Dear Community Partners,

Welcome back as we begin the 2023-2024 school year. I hope you had a wonderful and relaxing summer.  Our priority is to expand on all of our initiatives focused on academic, behavioral, and social emotional supports for our students and staff.  Our goals remain to support and sustain the educational achievement of all of our students, close achievement gaps, maintain a positive school culture, enhance communication efforts among educational partners, and to provide a safe and orderly environment.

We have new additions to our teaching staff and are thrilled to welcome David Carrillo (Math), Stephanie De Leon (Biology), Carissa Miranda (English), and Brandin Young (Frosh Seminar) to our teaching staff.  I am also excited to announce that BUHS will begin the implementation of a “Community School” grant.  This grant will allow BUHS to provide expanded learning opportunities, improve comprehensive support services, and to boost our core instructional programs.  The “Community School” process compliments the momentum we have created over the last couple of years with our introduction of ancillary support programs like Hazel Heath, Hazel Heart, ARC, Fresno State Parent Support, and our Family Resource Center.  All of these programs will help us to provide appropriate support and intervention for all students through our MTSS environment.

The district has undergone a major cosmetic transformation with improvements to landscaping and a fresh coat of paint has been applied to buildings.  The third phase of a major roofing project is nearing completion.  New HVAC units are being installed to compliment a new control system that has been implemented.  Enhancements to our technology network have also been completed.  The center of the BUHS campus has seen a new asphalt paving project completed.  Finally, the district is also supporting the City of Brawley with the refurbishing of the pool at the Lion’s Center.

I am excited and look forward to working with all of you during the upcoming school year.  It is our pleasure to serve our school community!

Sincerely,

Simon Canalez
Superintendent
