DELAC Meeting at BUHS Cafeteria

Brawley Union High School District kicked off its first District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) meeting of the year with a fresh new energy and a focus on family engagement. DELAC serves as a resource for parents of English learners to stay informed and involved in the district’s educational programs.

Led by Carolina Quintero, English Learner Liaison, and Yolanda Lemus, Special Projects Specialist, DELAC meetings are held throughout the school year to foster communication between families and district leaders.

For the first time ever, the meeting opened with a live performance by BUHS students who are part of a musical group called Rayos Del Desierto. These talented performers, were DELAC students before exiting the program. They had previously showcased their skills at the Homecoming Pep Rally in front of the student body. Their involvement reflects the district’s new initiative, #DELACDontStop, launched to spotlight DELAC students participating in extracurriculars like sports, clubs, and leadership roles.

During the meeting, Lemus shared valuable information about district programs, including Community Schools, family resource centers, and online services such as Hazel Health. Parents received pamphlets and had the opportunity to ask questions and engage directly with program leaders.

DELAC meetings are designed with families in mind. Many attendees brought their children, and the district made sure everyone felt welcome by offering coloring pages for younger kids and serving pizza for all. Quintero emphasized the importance of creating a space where families feel supported—especially those with children who will soon be part of BUHS and the DELAC community.
